Roblox's AI-Powered Game Creation Feature Arrives in Mobile App

Roblox has introduced a new feature called 'Build' that enables users to design games from their mobile devices using artificial intelligence. This feature, which has been in development for some time, was first hinted at by Roblox's head of developer experience, Lauren Forristal, at the Game Developers Conference in 2022.

The Numbers

Roblox's Build feature leverages a range of AI models, including both open-source and proprietary Roblox models. The feature generates an initial version of the game, which users can then modify and share with friends. Companies like Google, Microsoft, and Tencent have developed similar tools, but Roblox's approach is distinct in its accessibility and ease of use.

The Backstory

Roblox has been experimenting with AI in game development for years. In 2023, the company introduced 'Roblox Connect,' an avatar-based video-calling feature that allowed developers to collaborate on game projects remotely. However, Roblox has since discontinued this feature, opting instead to focus on AI-powered game creation.

What's Next

The Build feature will enter public alpha testing on July 28, and will be available to users in New Zealand aged nine and older who have verified their age. Users aged 16 and up will have the opportunity to publish their creations to a global audience. Roblox is also working on developing AI agents that will assist creators in playtesting and providing analytics, as well as an AI foundation model for generating 3D game assets and an AI chatbot for supporting developers through the game-building process.

The Build feature has the potential to democratize game development and make it more accessible to a wider audience. However, it also raises questions about the impact of AI-generated games on the industry. A recent survey found that 52% of game industry professionals believe generative AI is having a negative impact on the industry. As Roblox's Build feature becomes more widespread, it will be interesting to see how it affects game development and the platform's user base.

Additionally, the company is exploring ways to integrate the Build feature with its existing platform.
